Sun loving container plants for roof garden screen

Bamboo

Choose the proper container for growing bamboo. Since bamboo is a fast grower, you will need a large pot to begin with. Choose a pot that will give the bamboo enough room to grow for 2 years before you have to transplant it into a larger pot. Bamboo has rhizome roots that "run." A shorter pot is better than a tall, deep container. There should be at least 3 inches between the root ball and all sides of the container.

Use a well-draining, nutrient-rich soil to grow bamboo in containers. There should be enough humidity to satisfy the bamboo plant.

Water the bamboo enough to keep the soil on the dry side of moist. The soil needs to be well draining as soggy soil will kill the bamboo. The container should have proper drainage.

Fertilize bamboo with a fertilizer high in nitrogen and low in potash. It can be water soluble or a time release fertilizer.

Passion Flower

It's  one of the best for butterflies as a variety of them drink its nectar.

Growing Conditions: Full sun and well-drained soil

Size: Climbs to 10 feet

Trumpet Creeper (Campsis radicans)

Trumpet Flower Vine is easy to grow. They prefer full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. Plants like a rich soil to fuel their fast growth. Mix a healthy dose of compost into the soil prior to planting.

Plants like a lot of water and nutrients. Keep soil moist. Add general purpose fertilizer when planting, and every two to three weeks during the season. Switch to a high phosphorous formula just before the blooming period.

Trumpet Flower Vine needs some form of support to climb up. Trellises or fences work well.

Keep the areas weeded when plants are young. A layer of mulch will keep weeds down, and create a neat appearance.

Trumpet Flower Vine can be invasive. They are good "re-seeders". If the pods are allowed to open and pour out their seeds, you will find many new plants next year. Do not disturb the soil until seedlings have begun to grow. Thinning will almost certainly be needed. If you don't want them to spread too rapidly, pick seed pods as they appear.

Russian Vine

Is probably the fastest wall cover of all, but can easily get out of hand as it can grow 5m (16ft) in one season.

Growing Conditions

  • Russian vine does best in conditions that are neither too cold nor wet. It grows well in most soil types, but it excels in sandy loams. Though it can tolerate and survive some drought, it prefers to be watered regularly. Russian vine does well with full to partial sunlight and crawls as well as climbs, so it can be used as ground cover.
